If you read my Instagram bio, you will see one of my favourite things to do is belly laugh. For those of you who aren’t sure what that truly means, it’s like hearty laughter but deeper. It’s the kind of laughter that erupts in your belly, you lose all control of yourself and cackle away until you’re heart’s content caring for little else but enjoying its joy. It’s an extremely important activity in my life and something I try to practice every day. To quote the infamous Charlie Chaplin: “A day without laughter is a day wasted.” I couldn’t agree with this more. For me, laughing is up there with  breathing, food, love and human touch; how could we survive without it?

“I want to share with you one of the best things to ever happen in my lol-ing life.”

Despite the world being a truly wonderful place in many respects, none of us is immune to its challenges and it can be a battle for the best of us to not only to stay in the gratitude space but to take 5 and make time for fun. I know with the kind of work I want to do in this world, I need other elements in my life to be light, bright and carefree. That’s why I want to share with you one of the best things to ever happen in my lol-ing life. I bring you Late Night Lols; an organic happening that has now become a regular feature.

It all began two summers ago when I was living with my darling sister. It’s worth noting that I am the friend in the group who will unashamedly and consistently tag you in and send you memes. She joked one day that I was spamming her phone with all the notifications she was receiving throughout the day. So, in true sibling fashion and in the spirit of more humour, I held back so she would think I had stopped altogether, gathered a ton of memes and waited for the opportune moment to release them all to her at once. Then she would know what spamming truly looked like. *cue evil laugh

One night when all the other housemates were asleep, and a blanket of silence was being pulled across the house, we said our goodnights and she pottered into her bedroom which was next to mine. This was the moment I launched my lol-slaught. I could hear the chaos through the thin walls as her phone exploded with a barrage of messages, all in meme form. I waited with bated breath to see if I would ever see the sun rise again. Silence. I waited. Suddenly, I hear chuckles. Lots and lots of chuckles! Hurray! It worked! Then, in a dramatic plot twist, my phone beeps. It’s a counter attack. More memes! I couldn’t contain the laughter. Before we know it, we can both hear the other one trying to stop herself from laughing so we don’t wake our other housemates. This is what I call ‘mass laughing’. You know when something sets you off at mass when you are a kid and you are doing everything in your power to stop but you can’t as the entire laughathon is intensified by the fact you aren’t meant to be laughing. That’s what ensued. More memes are catapulted from my end and the hilarious back and forth continues until a final few are sent to mark a ceasefire, it’s sleep time now and warring shall be resumed at another night of either side’s choosing.

“The final thing I will see on my screen is a message from someone I love that is sure to make me smile.”

That is simply it. Late Night Lols takes place when the day’s tasks are over, you’re are ready for bed and it’s (almost) time for sleep. The final thing I will see on my screen is a message from someone I love that is sure to make me smile. What a way to end the day. Now, as we both live in different places and are busy from dawn to dusk, this is how she and I keep in contact, the connection live and our relationship full of fun. Not to mention lighten as well as brighten our day no matter how heavy it has been. In true LNL spirit, I will leave you with a selection of some of our recent favourites. Enjoy!
